How to run a Facebook competition correctly

If you’re just launching a product and want to increase exposure on social media then you have a variety of options. The main aim is to get as many people as possible to see the post and one of the most cost-effective ways to do this is by running a competition on Facebook. We often run social media competitions for our clients and here is all you need to know.

Decide on the prize for the competition winner

If you’re launching a product then the ideal scenario is to give it away as a prize. This isn’t always feasible as your cost of sales for the product could be too high. If this is the case then we’ll pick something else, such as a bottle of champagne or something of a similar ilk.

Decide on the entry qualifications for the competition

Facebook has many rules when it comes to competitions, for example, you can’t ask someone to share your post to enter. You are allowed to ask them to like the post to enter and this is usually the route we go down with our clients. We will check on the rules for the different social media platforms used.

Decide on the right duration for the competition

We usually recommend around a week for social media competitions as a time frame. This allows the post enough time to gain traction and pick up if the page has a small number of likes. We can consider shorter time frames if your page already has a considerable amount of likes.

Selecting the winner of your social media competition

There are various programmes out there that allow us to randomly pick a winner. We can of course do it the old-fashioned way with a name out of a hat, but this isn’t particularly time effective! We then post and thank everyone for entering and announce who the winner is.
