What is The Google Page Experience Algorithm Update?
The Google Page Experience Algorithm Update is being introduced in February 2022 to introduce Crew Web Vitals as a ranking factor in Google results. Core Web Vitals provides metrics that quantify critical issues on a webpage that may cause a user to have a negative experience. We have guides covering each specific part of Core Web Vitals, but to recap:
LCP- Largest Contentful Paint
The length of time it takes for the largest feature visible at the start of the page takes to load. The longer this takes, the more frustrating the loading experience will be for the end-user. Your LCP score must be within 2.5 seconds for a good result from Google.
FID- First Input Delay
The time it takes for a website to respond to a user’s first click on a button, link, etc. FID must be under 100ms to be considered a good score on interactivity for Google.
CLS- Cumulative Layout Shift
Measures the most significant burst of unexpected layout shift that occurs when a user visits a page. Suppose you’ve ever had a button move unexpectedly when you’ve tried to click on it. In that case, you have first-hand experience with the frustration measuring CLS aims to solve! Your overall CLS score needs to be under 0.1 for Google to consider your page to have a good score.
How will this affect your website?
Many desktop sites are currently unoptimized for Core Web Vitals. If you do not ensure a good score is reached by February of 2022, your site’s rankings on keywords will suffer. Conversely, making sure you’re ready to go for the new Page Experience Algorithm Update will help you rank above other sites!
