The benefits of HTTP/2

What is HTTP/2 and how does it affect me?

The time it takes a website to appear in front of a visitor is extremely important. Research shows websites that take longer than 4 seconds to load have a much higher bounce rate (visitors close the website) than websites that appear in under 4 seconds.

Previous to HTTP/2 being launched the majority of the internet operates on the HTTP/1.1 protocol.

Upon visiting a website and in the seconds it takes to appear your computer/tablet/phone is downloading the various files required to enable the website to display correctly. HTTP/1.1 can request each file and download them one at a time – to put this into perspective, a modern day WordPress driven site may need to request in excess of 50 plus files to enable the website to load display correctly. You can imagine the time this takes and it explains the delay in loading certain modern websites especially if there are high resolution images or even video files involved.

So, welcome HTTP/2

Web servers and visitors utilising HTTP/2 will have files “pushed” to their device prior to the websites HTML code meaning everything is already waiting to appear when the HTML code of a page is read. Page speed increases of up to 20% can be achieved by using HTTP/2 but at the moment this cannot be measured using tools such as Googles PageSpeed, as the protocol is so new. Even the Google Bots dont request websites through it just yet. This is set to change in the near future.

Here are a few SEO benefits of using HTTP/2

  • Faster page load times
  • Increased levels of security
  • Even more mobile friendly
  • Less development work required to increase page load times
  • It remains compatible with HTTP/1.1
