Steve Jobs elevated the conference to a whole other level that fateful day in 2007. The “One more thing” reveal of the iPhone is one of the most iconic tech moments of the century so far, leading the tech giants of the world desperate to capture the same gravitas. This year, Google held its “I/O Conference”, announcing some exciting new developments in the tech world. Today, our experts at Wildfire are going to walk you through some of the highlights from the event and how they’ll affect your business and Digital Marketing at large.
MUM’s Home and so is LaMDA!
BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) is Google’s current language model. When you talk to Google Assistant or type a question into Google, BERT is the one who works out what you say. AI Technology moves fast, however, and BERTs time at the cutting edge is quickly coming to an end. That’s where MUM comes in.
MUM (Multitask Unified Model) is built on the same transformer architecture as BERT, it’s just 1000 times more powerful and, as the name would suggest, is capable of multitasking. LaMDA is equally as powerful, bringing the same smarter results to Google Search. Google provided a great demonstration of this new tech by having LaMDApretend to be a paper aeroplane. That’s right, this new model is so good it can play pretend.
This has great potential for Digital Marketing. A smarter google means smarter results. Smarter results make it easier for customers to find you. Keep an eye out for MUM and LaMDA, we’re confident your business will benefit.
Google to Codify Shopify
Shopify is one of the most ubiquitous platforms for eCommerce on the net. If you run a business that utilises eCommerce in any form, you’re likely using Shopify. Google is keenly aware of this and has begun to work closely with Shopify to better integrate the platform into google search results. For example, Google Chrome will now be able to track customers open shopping baskets across different Shopify sites, driving your customers to finalise sales.
Shopify will also integrate seamlessly directly into google search results across all their platforms. This seems to be related to their somewhat vague announcement of the “Shopping Graph”. This feature remained largely undefined but seems to be Google’s way to connect all Shopify storefronts and present all available products within a search result.
If there was a time to get into the Shopify Platform, it would be now!
Android 12 and Material You
Material design is the trend of the past decade and shows no signs of slowing down. Whilst maligned by some, its sleekness and modernity are thoroughly embraced by Google. For their latest android update, soon to be applied to millions – if not billions – of phones, Google has given their own brand material design a refresh. Thicker lines and flatter texture, designed to look smooth and fast on phones. Colours are faded and pastel, automatically matching your phone background. UI design just got better for a vast majority of your users. Emulate and exceed these standards and you’re sure to stand out in the visual department.
